Olympia Floors

In the current nature of the world we’re all living in right now, hygiene is more important than ever. At this moment the entire world is using preventive sanitary measures to remain healthy and prevent the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 and other pathogens and germs. Globally, everyone is responsibly practicing social distancing in a collective effort to stay alive. At least for all of us who have always made sure to maintain a clean, lovely, comfortable home, it is so comforting and reassuring to safely quarantine in the comfort of your own home sweet home with our loved ones, to relieve the fear, uncertainty and anxiety caused by the pandemic. Now is when we can truly, fully appreciate all the fastidiousness we invested in our wonderful lair!

Are you experiencing what Olympia Floors is saying? You might even be letting your children try their hand as apprentice cooks. And specific chores are being assigned to each family member in the household.  You are in control because you are all comfortable in the safety of your own home with everyone alright right there with you and this has helped all of you relax. You guys certainly are indulging  in plenty of movies and video games.

During this time of health consciousness, you are now aware from quarantining of how important it is to prevent germs and bacteria on all the floors and surfaces of your home. It’s easy to disinfect often-touched objects in your home like door knobs and appliances with certain approved chemical wipes and sprays,  but it’s natural for many people to inquire how they can reduce their family’s risk of illness if they have soft carpet in their homes. Olympia Floors has shared the following steps with you to help you clean your carpet and kill its germs as part of a greater effort to disinfect your home and protect your loved ones.

Can You Become Sick From Carpet?

People cherish soft carpeting because of its warmth, comforting cushion, and luxurious feel underfoot. You are content and feel so blessed, as you enjoy watching your family spend time together reading and watching TV, playing with the kids and pets, and playing with toys, puzzles, and games, knowing how great it is that there’s a soft landing place in the rooms of your wonderful home for every kind of activity.

However, dirt, dust and pet dander will accumulate in your carpet if you don’t regularly vacuum it properly. It is also very possible for germs to linger on surfaces in all homes. That’s what makes it so important to keep your carpet clean even if the carpet itself will not make you sick. The following are the multiple methods available of properly cleaning your carpet, which include additional instructions from the Centers for Disease Control on how you should disinfect your carpet:

The Right Vacuum Cleaner Must Be Selected

Just because a vacuum cleaner is from a top leading brand doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the best at removing dander and dirt. It does not mean it will be most effective just because a high-end model functions as a robotic vacuum cleaner or has superior suction power. Olympia Floors does not recommend vacuum cleaners that are not adjustable to accommodate different carpet heights.

When purchasing a new vacuum cleaner model, Olympia Floors recommends that you always select one that is certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Seal of Approval/Green Label Vacuum Cleaner Program. The main thing that you must make sure is that you choose a vacuum cleaner that’s a good match for your carpet to create the most effective airflow. Some key points for you to consider when selecting the right vacuum cleaner are:

  • Brushes/Beater Bar – To create better airflow based on your carpet’s specific pile height and prevent damage to your carpet, the surface of your carpet should be just lightly touched by a vacuum with a rotating brush or beater bar. Olympia Floors recommends disengaging the beater bar entirely when vacuuming some wool loop berber carpets.
  • Vacuum Height – The most important feature in a vacuum cleaner is adjustable height, because you won’t get to the debris and gritty soil below with a vacuum set too high above the carpet surface. If the setting is too low, a vacuum’s brushes or beater bar can fuzz the carpet’s surface. Fiber type and pile height are what your ideal height setting for airflow is based on. Premium soft carpet and high pile require higher settings, while long pile, casual frieze, or thick loop carpet may require suction only. You can perform test runs by using carpeting in your closets.
  • Suction Type – Effective removal of debris and dirt is not ensured by extreme suction power that can even cause damage to the carpet. You must always avoid sealed or concentrated suction for high pile, premium soft carpet.

Carpets actually are passive air filters that trap dander, dust, and pollen from the breathing zone. With all your family now constantly indoors due to these pandemic times, high-traffic areas should wisely be vacuumed on a daily basis with slow, repetitive motions that overlap. Medium-traffic areas should be vacuumed twice per week, and all other areas in the home that are carpeted should be vacuumed at least once per week, right up to the edges where pet hair and debris tend to accumulate. A full list of You will find a complete list of Carpet and Rug Institute-certified vacuum cleaners available right on their (CRI’s) website.

The Proper Way to Remove Carpet Stains

It’s more than likely that something will get spilled on your carpet at some point, especially now that your family is spending extra time indoors thanks to the pandemic. You’re in great shape if you have carpets like the SmartStrand carpet available right here at Olympia Floors, for they offer great spill protection. It’s fibers are engineered with 100% permanent, inherent stain resistance protection that won’t ever wash or wear off. You can remove stains and spills generally quicker than most other carpets because of its advanced Nanoloc™ Spill and Soil Shield that makes carpet three times easier to clean. Olympia Floors has the complete selection of these wonderful carpets.

You do not need to worry and stress when spills do occur on your carpet; you just have to clean it up right away with the appropriate spill cleaners that prevent moisture absorption into the carpet and stop stains from ever forming. Before using a cleaning product, you should first try removing the stain with warm water. To prevent the spill from spreading, you must always start from the outside of the stain. Any spilled solid material can be removed with a dull knife or a spoon. Then blot up liquid with paper towels or a white towel, and try removing the remaining stain with warm water. It is very important that you always make sure you NEVER use any cleaner with a pH of 10 or higher.

If the stain won’t go away like that and you still need to use a cleaner to completely remove it from your carpet, it’s extremely important that you determine what type of stain you have in order to match the perfect cleaner. Typically, the stains that generally occur in homes include greasy, oil-based stains (gum, peanut butter, chocolate, crayon, glue), common water-based stains (food, marker, candy, juices, beer), special water-based stains (soil, soda, liquor, wine, watercolor paint), and a separate special category of water-based stains comprised of pet urine, tea, and coffee.

Once you have identified what type of stain you have, you can use the recommended gentle DIY cleaning solution to remove the stain and disinfect that area of your carpet. You should keep the following ingredients and items available in your pantry, to create these solutions and be ready at a moment’s notice:  non-bleaching, non-sudsing household ammonia, absorbent paper towels or white towels, clear hand dishwashing detergent, and white vinegar. Slowly and closely follow the stain removal technique outlined above for your specific type of stain for the best results!

How to Best Clean Your Carpet

Professional hot water extraction using cleaning products, systems or equipment that carry the CRI Seal of Approval is one of the most effective methods for thoroughly cleaning soft carpet. For those of you whose carpets’ warranty requires professional cleaning at least every 18 months,  it is best that you stay closer to a 12-month time frame if your pets and kids go outside every day and your household is full at all times. The best way to refresh your carpet’s appearance and keep it healthy, is to give it periodic cleaning by a certified carpet-care professional. Nothing like an experienced professional like Olympia Floors!

It may not be the final step, but a great step in your plan to disinfect your home is to have your carpet professionally cleaned. And then afterward, you’ll need to chemically disinfect your carpet to kill germs.

Disinfecting Your Carpet

After you thoroughly clean your carpet, Olympia Floors recommends that you follow the household cleaning guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control for up-to-the-minute information on how to best disinfect your home properly, including floors with soft or porous surfaces like carpet. Remember to always test disinfectants in an inconspicuous area (like a closet) before using.

Obviously, it is always much better to get all the dirt, dust, and bacteria out of your carpet as effectively as possible, and to kill the lingering germs. Here you can get everyone in your household involved, with the chance to establish great cleaning routines with your family. You can even incentivize such by creating rewards, such as special sweet treats with screen time after all chores are successfully completed. The cleaning and disinfecting process will be much more effective and quicker by the consistency you yourself create.
